Rat infusion and sampling systems
The most configurable rat setup we build
Rat work is where most of our custom catheter development has happened. Thousands of rat catheters across just about every application, which means we usually know what works in your model before you finish describing it.

Catheters
RatCath Taper uses tapered radiopaque polyurethane. The rounded tip enters the vessel cleanly, and the thicker proximal wall resists kinking and makes connection to ports, stub adaptors and tethers easier.
| Product | Materials | Sizes | Length | Connector | Part no. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RatCath Taper Jugular | Radiopaque polyurethane | 3 Fr, 4 Fr | 15 cm | CoilConnect plug | RCTJ34 |
| RatCath Taper Femoral | Radiopaque polyurethane | 2 Fr, 4 Fr | 22 cm | CoilConnect plug | RCTF24 |
Custom rat catheter program
Custom extrusion sizes. Custom materials including Pebax, PTFE and PFA. Custom durometers from 30 to 90. Configurations for CSF, bile, subQ, IP, urinary and duodenal access.
Access
MagnaPort Micro, the unbuttoned skin button. The port is fully implanted; access is through a magnetic transcutaneous connection needle. Long-term access without the exit-site maintenance a skin button demands.
| Size | Material | ID | OD | Length | Modifications | Part no. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 French | Polyurethane | 0.43 mm | 0.94 mm | 15 cm | Round tip, radiopaque beads | MPM-3P |
Cath-In-Cath 2 ports in ultra low and low profile also suit rat work where a fully implanted port is preferred. See ports.
Harness and pump
FastTether 2 modular rodent infusion system works with jackets, harnesses, luer-based systems, ports, standard tether lines or dual channel. Replace a contaminated injection connection instead of the whole harness. Kits FT2K-H01, FT2K-H02, FT2K-J01.
The AVA ST DL wireless dual syringe pump is two independent pumps in one housing: infuse saline, switch to compound at a set time, then return to saline. One module monitors up to 50 pumps wirelessly. See pumps.
Other access routes
Vascular access is the common case. These are built to protocol for rat work on the same catheter platform.
- CSF and intrathecal. CSF collection and CNS dosing, built to the route
- Duodenal. Enteral dosing and absorption work
- Bile. Bile duct cannulation for collection studies
- SubQ, IP and urinary. Subcutaneous, intraperitoneal and urinary configurations on request
In the literature
A quick-connect catheter and tether evaluation in rats, presented at SOT 2007 by a major contract research organization, used the AVA FastTether rodent infusion system. See publications.
